Front Porch Lutherie Custom Amps
This is a cool single-ended, 10 watt recording/practice, hand-wired tube amp. I have been building and repairing tube amps over the years for my own enjoyment and when I found a guy with some Army surplus ammo boxes, my mind started to think about the type of amp I could fit into them! Well, I have some free time, so I decided to build 4 of these to fit the boxes I bought.
The amp is based on the Dave Hunter Two-Stroke circuit with some modifications. It is very dynamic and touch sensitive and that is one of the reasons I used this circuit. The amp tube compliment is: Sovtek 5Y3 rectifier tube, JJ 6L6 output tube, and a JJ ECC83 preamp tube. The power tube is cathode biased which allows you to change out the 6L6 for a: 5881, KT66, KT88, 6V6, or any octal tube in this family. The preamp tube can be exchanged for a 12AX7, 12AY7, 12AT7, 12AU7, ECC82,81 for more or less gain. Even the 5Y3 can be changed for a 5AR4 for less sag. This along with different speakers gives you an amazing variety of sounds.
I have always felt the Princeton Tweed tone circuit (Hunter’s two stroke amp is based on a Princeton Tweed) is too linked with the volume pot, so I used the “moonlight” tone stack circuit that makes the tone control much more independent. There is also a bright switch which changes cap values on the preamp bias circuit keeping this tone modifier out of the signal path.
I added a standby switch to the circuit, and used a single ended Hammond output transformer with a 4, 8, & 16 ohm switch on the back. The Power transformer is an over-spec Tweed Deluxe replacement (Heyboer I think). Sprague Atom filter caps, Mallory 150 coupling caps, carbon film resistors, carbon comp 68k input resistor (preferred), cloth wire, all top components.
The lid is removable, so when you are done with your session, put the cord inside, put the lid back on, and carry the amp home. Due to the increase in Homeland Security, you might not be able to bring this as a carry-on on your next flight 😉 Please feel free to email me with any questions, or for clips.
